Nobody likes a hard steering wheel. It’s like trying to roll a brick instead of a car. Modern cars rely on power steering to reduce the stress of slow driving. When the system ages, wears out or has adjustment problems, the help disappears. Suddenly, a simple left turn into a parking space becomes an exercise.
If you want to know why the steering wheel is hard to turn, you don’t need to go to the shop right away. You can diagnose the most common causes yourself. Let’s start with the basics. fluid levels. leak. belt.
First check the power steering fluid level
A low fluid level is the simplest solution and the most common cause of stiff steering. The power steering pump requires hydraulic pressure to operate. If the tank is empty or the fluid level is low, the pump will cavitate or not be able to push fluid through the line.

Put your friend in the driver’s seat. Start the engine. Have them turn the handle all the way to the left, then all the way to the right and hold it there for a few seconds. This loads the pump to the maximum.
Listen carefully. Do you hear loud squeal or screech? This sound usually means that the belt is loose and slipping on the pulley. It is also possible that the belt is glazed or worn. Loose belts must be tightened. Worn belts must be replaced.
