It takes a few minutes to fill the tank. Charging an electric car can seem like a lifelong process. BYD wants to eliminate this difference. The Chinese giant has just launched a new Super e-Platform and it is already in mass production. This is not a lab prototype. This is real hardware.
The claim is aggressive. Add 400 kilometers of range in 5 minutes. For this purpose, the system can handle a peak power of 1000 kW. This is a huge improvement over current standards.
Now, if your electric car supports 800 volts, you can probably go 300 kilometers in about 15 minutes. That is fast. But BYD’s new setup aims to make long charging stops a thing of the past. This brings electric driving closer to the comfort of a combustion engine.
What car can handle this kind of power?
Not all BYDs can consume that much power. There are currently only two models available: BYD Han L and Tang L. They were unveiled alongside the platform. They were unveiled alongside the platform.
Both vehicles are equipped with a new electric motor with an output of 580 kW. It has a lot of torque and speed potential. But there’s a problem. 1000 kW power is limited to these models.

The Hardware Gap
There is no point in owning a car that can produce 1000kW if your charger cannot deliver it. BYD knows that. They launched the Megawatt Flash Charger.
The charger can produce up to 1360 kW of power. Let’s think about this number. Tesla’s Superchargers are currently limited to 250 kW. Despite rumored upgrades, it’s nowhere near that level of power. Other suppliers offer higher capacities, but none come close to one megawatt.
BYD plans to install 4,000 such chargers in China. The timing is strategic. Tesla’s sales volume in China is declining. BYD believes that speed will attract hesitant buyers.
Why is this important now?
The range anxiety debate is shifting. It used to be a question of how far you could go. Now it is about how fast you can refill. If you can travel 400 kilometers in five minutes, the “refueling” argument against EVs collapses.
However, infrastructure is a bottleneck. China is building a network to support this. Other markets are watching. This 5 minute charge is exclusive to China until the charger arrives in other countries.
The technology exists. The car is ready. The charger is on its way. The only question is when the rest of the world can test it.
