Mercedes-Benz is preparing an all-electric C-Class, set to launch in 2026, aiming to rival BMW’s upcoming i3. The vehicle, officially dubbed the ‘C-Class with EQ Technology’, will offer a projected range of up to 800 kilometers – a significant leap forward in electric sedan capability.
Design: A Blend of Old and New
The most striking visual element is the return of a prominent, upright grille. This design choice, preserved despite leadership changes in Mercedes’ design department, represents a deliberate move away from the highly stylized, polarizing looks of recent EVs like the EQS and EQE. The new C-Class EV adopts a more conventional sedan profile, a “three-box” shape familiar to car buyers.
The illuminated grille, featuring four horizontal slats (compared to the three on the GLC EV), is a nod to Mercedes’ heritage. It contrasts with the otherwise streamlined body, creating a unique aesthetic that seeks to balance tradition with modernity.
Powertrain and Technology
Underneath the retro-inspired exterior, the C-Class EV rides on Mercedes’ MB.EA platform, an 800-volt architecture that enables ultra-fast DC charging at speeds up to 330kW. The powertrain options will likely mirror those of the GLC EV.
- Top-spec model: Dual-motor all-wheel drive with 360kW of power, a two-speed gearbox, and a 94kWh NMC battery for a claimed 713km WLTP range.
- Entry-level versions: Single-motor rear-wheel drive with a smaller LFP battery for increased affordability.
Inside, higher trims are expected to feature the massive 39.1-inch ‘MBUX Hyperscreen’ dashboard – a signature element of Mercedes’ latest electric offerings.
Competition and Market Position
The C-Class EV directly competes with BMW’s forthcoming i3 sedan, which also promises up to 800km of range. Both automakers are betting on long-distance capability as a key selling point in the growing EV market.
Mercedes-AMG is also developing its own electric performance models, while BMW plans a high-performance, quad-motor i3 variant. This competition will push both brands to innovate further in battery technology and powertrain efficiency.
The return of a classic grille on an advanced EV platform is a calculated move by Mercedes-Benz, signaling a shift toward more familiar designs while maintaining cutting-edge electric capabilities. The C-Class EQ aims to appeal to a broader audience by blending heritage with future-proof technology.
