Ram confirmed that the eTorque mild-hybrid system is being retired for the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. This change is rolling out starting with the 2027 model year, though production shifts happen in stages. If you hate the idea of a complex electrical system cluttering a straightforward V8, your patience is paying off.
The 2026 model year marked a shift where every 1500 Ram equipped with the Hemi had to carry the eTorque hardware. That era ends now. For 2027 onward, buyers who want that old-school big-block feel without the extra battery packs or belt-driven motors get exactly that.
The Specs Remain The Same
Here is what stays constant. The engine still pushes out 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. It retains the Multi-Displacement System, which allows it to run on four cylinders during light-load driving to save gas. That feature is old hat. It’s been there for years.
What disappears is the hardware that complicates the powertrain.
When this transition is complete, you will no longer see the 48-volt battery, the motor-generator, or the automatic stop-start system tied to the engine. The result is an engine that idles normally. No more silent cycling off at traffic lights. It starts conventionally. It behaves like the Hemis of the past.
A Clear Path For 2027
Ram didn’t drop this news all at once. The company hinted at the direction when it announced the 2027 Ramcharger SRT Rumble Bee would use a non-hybrided Hemi. That specific trim makes sense—it’s about raw power. But now, the standard Hemi 5.7L is getting the same treatment.
The transition at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant won’t be instant. Early 2027 models will likely carry both versions of the engine. If you can find a spec sheet from the early production run, you might still get the mild-hybrid version. But the plant is moving toward the conventional setup.
Prices and EPA ratings have not been adjusted by Ram yet. It remains to be seen if removing that electrical hardware affects the fuel economy numbers or the bottom line.
Broader Context
This move clarifies the 2027 lineup. Ram is offering a massive spread of engines:
- The 3.6-liter Pentastar naturally aspirated V6.
- The 5.7-liter Hemi with eTorque removed (coming in 2027).
- The supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 at 777 horsepower.
- Multiple iterations of the Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six.
By removing the hybrid requirement from the 5.7-liter, Ram gives traditionalists an out. You no longer have to choose between a V8 and an electrified powertrain if you just want the old-school experience. The Hemi 5.7 L mild hybrid era is effectively over.
