Jaguar has made a decisive shift toward becoming a luxury electric vehicle (EV) brand, and this restructuring has involved cancelling three planned models to prioritize the development of a single, high-performance four-door GT sedan known as the Type 00. The decision has sparked debate, especially given the vehicles abandoned in favor of this new direction.
Canceled Projects: XJ, XF, and F-Type Successors
For years, Jaguar was preparing an all-new electric XJ sedan, a car that could have accommodated both battery-electric and six-cylinder powertrains depending on market demand. However, the project was abruptly cancelled shortly before completion. Similarly, designs for a new XF sedan and an updated F-Pace SUV by former design director Ian Callum were also scrapped.
Perhaps the most controversial decision was shelving the development of a successor to the F-Type sports car. The original F-Type is regarded by many as one of Jaguar’s last truly iconic vehicles. Eliminating its replacement in favor of an EV grand tourer is a significant departure for a brand historically known for its sporty offerings.
Design Director’s Critique
Callum himself has expressed reservations about Jaguar’s new direction. While acknowledging the Type 00’s boldness, he believes it lacks the beauty synonymous with the Jaguar brand, stating it feels “too retro.” This highlights the tension between the company’s ambition to compete with Bentley and Rolls-Royce and its historical design identity.
The Type 00: Performance and Ambition
Jaguar intends to position the Type 00 as a direct competitor to ultra-luxury brands, abandoning mass-market sales in favor of exclusive, high-performance EVs. The production model will retain the concept’s striking design with additional doors and an extended wheelbase.
The vehicle is expected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower from three electric motors, providing a 0-62 mph acceleration in approximately 3.3 seconds, a 155 mph top speed, and a range of over 430 miles. This aggressive performance profile underscores Jaguar’s commitment to challenging established luxury EV leaders.
Ultimately, Jaguar’s gamble on a singular, high-end EV model represents a dramatic shift in strategy, sacrificing established models to pursue a future focused on luxury and performance. Whether this gamble will pay off remains to be seen.
