You want more power. There are three main levers to pull. You can increase displacement. You can force more air in with a turbo or supercharger. Or, if you want to go extreme, you ditch gasoline for something with higher energy density. Top Fuel dragsters do all three.

The engine in a Top Fuel dragster isn’t just a high-revving V8. It is a specialized machine designed to burn nitromethane.

What is nitromethane and why does it produce more power?

Nitromethane and gasoline are chemically different beasts. Gasoline is a hydrocarbon, usually represented by the formula C8H18. Nitromethane is CH3NO2. Think of nitromethane as gasoline pre-mixed with nitrous oxide. The fuel carries its own oxygen atoms.

This changes the combustion math entirely.

To burn one pound of gasoline, you need roughly 15 pounds of air. To burn one pound of nitromethane, you need only 1.7 pounds of air. That is a massive difference. Because nitromethane brings its own oxygen, you can pump about eight times more fuel into a cylinder of a given volume and still achieve complete combustion.

Pound for pound, nitromethane is less energetic than gasoline. But you are burning so much more of it per stroke that the net result is a huge power gain. You aren’t getting an eight-fold increase in power. It’s closer to a 2.5x improvement. Still, doubling or tripling your horsepower just by changing the fuel is a massive advantage.

How much fuel do Top Fuel engines consume?

The numbers are staggering. A typical Top Fuel engine has a displacement of 8.9 liters. It is supercharged. It produces around 6,000 horsepower.

It burns close to a gallon (4 liters) of nitromethane per second.

To visualize that: that is roughly 2 teaspoons (10 cc) of nitromethane poured into each cylinder per intake stroke. The engine is drinking fuel faster than most people can imagine.

Why do dragsters shoot flames from the exhaust?

There is a side effect to this chemical shortcut. Nitromethane doesn’t burn as quickly as gasoline.

In a standard engine, the fuel burns completely before the exhaust valve opens. In a Top Fuel engine, there isn’t enough time. The spark plug fires, the explosion starts, but the reaction is still ongoing when the piston starts moving down to push the gases out.

The engine is pumping still-burning nitromethane into the exhaust pipe.

That is why you see flames shooting out the back. The fuel finishes burning outside the cylinder. It is inefficient, technically. But at 6,000 horsepower, efficiency is the last thing on the designer’s mind.
