BMW is gearing up to launch the iX4, a new all-electric fastback SUV set to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y and Porsche Macan Electric. Spy shots confirm the vehicle is undergoing final testing, with an expected global debut later this year and Australian arrival in 2027. This launch is critical for BMW, as it marks the second vehicle built on their ambitious Neue Klasse EV platform – a €10 billion investment aimed at securing the company’s future in electric mobility.
Neue Klasse Platform: BMW’s Electric Revolution
The Neue Klasse platform represents BMW’s major push into the EV market. The iX3, the first model on this platform, will hit Australian showrooms in 2026. However, the iX4, while not yet officially confirmed for Australia, is highly anticipated for a 2027 release.
Why this matters: BMW is betting heavily on this new platform. The company plans to launch 40 new or updated models globally by 2028, making this a key part of their overall strategy. The success of the Neue Klasse vehicles will determine whether BMW can maintain its position in the luxury automotive market as EV adoption grows.
Design and Performance: Sportier and More Luxurious
The iX4 distinguishes itself with a sportier design. Spy shots reveal a dramatically sloped roofline and a more aggressive rear-end compared to the iX3 and the standard X4. Despite the sleeker profile, the iX4 is expected to share core technologies with the iX3, including the advanced 800-volt electrical architecture.
Expectations: The iX4 will likely sacrifice some cargo space compared to the iX3 (520-1750L) in exchange for its more dynamic silhouette. Pricing is projected to be higher than the iX3, which is estimated to start around $120,000 in Australia.
Tech and Powertrain: Cutting-Edge Features
Inside, the iX4 will feature BMW’s Panoramic iDrive infotainment system: a massive 43.3-inch display across the windscreen, a head-up display, and a 17.9-inch touchscreen running BMW Operating System X. The powertrain will mirror the iX3 50 xDrive: a dual-motor setup producing 345kW and 645Nm of torque, with a 108kWh battery offering up to 805km of range.
Future models: BMW plans to introduce a more affordable rear-wheel drive iX3 variant in 2027, with a high-performance M60 model potentially following later.
BMW’s Broader EV Expansion
The iX4 is part of a wider EV push from BMW. The smaller iX1 electric SUV is also in development, expected for release in 2027 with Australian availability in 2028/2029. The company is also preparing the first i3 sedan and developing both electric and combustion versions of the M3 sports sedan.
In 2025, the iX1 was BMW’s best-selling EV in Australia, ranking among the top 10 EVs overall. BMW was the fifth-best selling EV brand behind Tesla, BYD, Kia, and MG.
The iX4’s arrival signifies BMW’s serious commitment to electric vehicles, positioning itself as a major player in the evolving automotive landscape. The combination of luxury, performance, and cutting-edge technology will make this SUV a compelling option for buyers seeking a premium electric experience.
