2027 Volkswagen Atlas: First Drive on Ice Reveals Refined Family SUV

Volkswagen is preparing to release the next generation of its popular Atlas SUV in 2027, aiming to stay competitive in the booming three-row crossover market. Recent testing reveals a vehicle that builds on the success of its predecessor while incorporating modern design and technology.

The Evolution of a Best-Seller

The current Atlas has consistently performed well, accounting for over 30% of Volkswagen’s SUV sales in 2025. However, with increased competition from rivals like the Toyota Grand Highlander and Kia Telluride, a refresh is essential. VW provided a preview by allowing journalists to test drive a prototype on an ice track in Canada, offering a glimpse into the second-generation model’s capabilities.

Design and Exterior Updates

While heavily camouflaged, the 2027 Atlas shares key design elements with the Chinese-market VW Teramont. Expect a similar front and rear fascia, with an updated interior and body panels. The illuminated badge and rear lightbar from the 2024 Atlas facelift will carry over, alongside an unchanged roofline.

The new model maintains the same 117.3-inch wheelbase as its predecessor, ensuring familiar interior space. However, the overall design appears chunkier and more angular, aligning with current automotive styling trends.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2027 Atlas rides on VW’s MQB EVO platform, the same architecture used in the Tiguan. The engine is a new four-cylinder variant, offering a modest power increase over the Tiguan to accommodate the larger vehicle. Power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission to either the front or all four wheels.

Testing on ice revealed stable handling, with limited risk of losing control even when driven aggressively. However, the vehicle is front-drive biased, meaning the all-wheel drive system doesn’t provide a true 50/50 torque split. One noted software issue caused the vehicle to shift into neutral when stuck in the snow, preventing immediate recovery.

Interior and Technology

Details on the interior remain limited, though VW claims it will be entirely new for the 2027 model year. The manufacturer has promised a more in-depth review upon launch.

Market Position and Outlook

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is shaping up to be a strong contender in the crowded three-row SUV segment. While further testing is needed to assess real-world performance, the early impressions are positive. The vehicle’s stability, updated design, and efficient powertrain suggest a continued success for VW’s family crossover.

The Atlas will continue to compete on practicality and value, rather than outright performance. Despite minor software quirks in the prototype, the new model appears well-positioned to meet the needs of mainstream buyers.
