Huawei’s Maextro S800 Dominates China’s Luxury Sedan Market

The Maextro S800, a collaborative effort between Huawei and JAC, has secured its position as the bestselling luxury sedan in China for January 2026. It outperformed both the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class combined, marking a significant shift in the high-end automotive landscape.

Rising Demand for Domestic Luxury

Since its launch in August 2025, the S800 has commanded prices between 708,000 and 1,018,000 yuan (approximately $102,600 to $147,520 USD). In December 2025, the model achieved a record 4,376 units sold, eclipsing its traditional German competitors. This trend highlights the growing preference among Chinese consumers for domestically produced luxury vehicles. The S800’s success is not merely a sales figure; it represents a re-alignment of brand loyalty in the world’s largest car market.

January Sales and Market Share

While January 2026 saw a 38.6% month-over-month decline to 2,625 units, the Maextro S800 still topped the segment. The BMW 7 Series (excluding the i7) followed with 1,188 units, and the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class with 1,040. The S800’s sales exceeded those of its two closest rivals combined, reinforcing its leadership. Cumulative sales since launch have reached 14,078 units, with strong concentrations in major cities such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing.

Strategic Distribution and Brand Positioning

Huawei’s HIMA (Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance) network plays a critical role in the S800’s success. This network also promotes Aito, Stelato, Luxeed, and Saic (Shangjie) vehicles, creating a centralized luxury automotive experience. The S800 is positioned as a direct competitor in the million-yuan price range, a goal Huawei Automotive BU executive Richard Yu previously stated the model would achieve.

Technical Specifications and Design

The Maextro S800 is a large sedan measuring 5480/2000/1536 mm with a 3,370 mm wheelbase — 89 mm longer than the BMW 7 Series. Its interior features a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 16-inch front passenger display. Innovative features include gesture-controlled dimming for rear passenger windows.

The all-electric variant offers a dual-motor setup with 390 kW (523 hp) and a 95 kWh battery, providing a CLTC range of 702 km. An extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version is also available, offering dual-motor (390 kW) or tri-motor (635 kW / 852 hp) configurations, complemented by a 1.5-liter generator and a 65 kWh battery for 365–400 km of electric range.

The Maextro S800’s dominance in China’s luxury market signals a new era where domestic brands are not just competing, but leading in innovation and sales. The shift reflects changing consumer preferences and Huawei’s aggressive expansion into the automotive sector.
