Mercedes-AMG is entering a new chapter with its upcoming flagship electric vehicle, the GT 4-Door. This model, built on the bespoke AMG.EA platform, will redefine the brand’s presence in the high-performance EV market. The interior has been previewed, signaling a departure from conventional Mercedes designs with a focus on driver engagement and luxury materials.
Driver-Centric Design and Cutting-Edge Technology
The new AMG GT 4-Door prioritizes the driving experience. A prominently angled 14-inch touchscreen, paired with a 10.2-inch driver display and a secondary 14-inch passenger screen, creates a cockpit that is both immersive and functional.
Interestingly, the inclusion of a virtual rev-counter on the driver’s display suggests the model will retain some elements of traditional performance car feel, potentially incorporating a Hyundai N-like virtual gearshift system alongside the electric powertrain. The cabin boasts unique AMG-designed interfaces running on the MBUX technology stack and MB.OS operating system.
Unlike some mainstream Mercedes models, the interior is rich in premium materials and intricate detailing, fitting for a vehicle expected to cost over £200,000. A new ‘chain-link’ air-vent design will also feature across other AMG EVs, with diamond-quilting referencing the brand’s racing heritage.
Physical Controls and Driving Modes
AMG is reintroducing tactile controls with a new center console featuring three physical dials. These allow instant access to drive modes (‘Response’), chassis/suspension settings (‘Agility’), and traction/stability controls (‘Traction’). This McLaren-like approach to adjustability highlights AMG’s commitment to delivering a truly engaging driving experience.
Ambient lighting, integrated wireless charging, and illuminated cupholders further enhance the cabin’s atmosphere. The new seats, available in various colors and materials, include integrated headrests and customizable backings, with options for carbon fiber or wood trim.
Rivaling the Top Tier
The AMG GT 4-Door, internally known as C590, will compete directly with the Porsche Taycan and Lotus Emeya. It marks the end of the V8-powered GT 4-Door model, serving as its high-performance electric successor.
Mercedes CTO Markus Schäfer described the vehicle as “a Swiss watch in the electric age,” emphasizing its attention to detail and bespoke engineering. The car will utilize axial-flux motors from British firm Yasa, which deliver three times the power density of conventional radial motors while remaining smaller and lighter.
Performance and Charging
The GT XX concept featured a tri-motor setup producing 1,341bhp, but the road-going version is expected to output around 1,000bhp. Despite the reduction in peak power, the car is still expected to deliver blistering acceleration.
The AMG.EA platform will feature an 800V electrical system capable of exceeding 850kW charging speeds, allowing for approximately 250 miles of range in five minutes once compatible chargers become available.
A New Standard in Electric Performance
The AMG GT 4-Door embodies the brand’s ambition to deliver an emotional, engaging electric driving experience. The combination of cutting-edge technology, luxurious materials, and performance-focused design sets a new standard for high-end EVs. This vehicle represents not just a shift in powertrains, but a commitment to maintaining AMG’s legacy of power, drivability, and track performance in the electric age.
