The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a permanent ban on airbags manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd. (DTN) following a three-year investigation linked to at least ten fatalities and two serious injuries. These airbags, illegally imported from China, have been identified as exploding upon deployment, ejecting metal fragments into vehicle cabins.
The Problem: Exploding Airbags
NHTSA’s investigation, launched in October 2025, revealed that DTN airbags – used primarily as aftermarket replacements in vehicles involved in prior collisions – malfunction catastrophically. Instead of inflating to protect occupants, the inflators detonate, turning into shrapnel-firing devices. This is not a manufacturing defect, but rather a fundamental failure of quality control and safety standards.
The crashes occurred between 2017 and 2022 in vehicles across ten states, with most incidents involving Chevrolet Malibus and Hyundai Sonatas. However, the agency warns that the defective DTN inflators may be present in other vehicle makes and models as well. The core issue is that these airbags were never certified for use in U.S. vehicles and were likely smuggled into the country.
Why This Matters
The proliferation of counterfeit auto parts poses a serious threat to public safety. These airbags are not subject to the same rigorous testing and quality assurance as those from established manufacturers. The economic incentive for using cheap, uncertified replacements—especially in repair shops dealing with totaled vehicles—creates a dangerous market where drivers unknowingly risk their lives.
This case highlights the vulnerability of the auto parts supply chain and the need for stricter enforcement against illegal imports. The fact that these airbags were installed in vehicles after accidents suggests a breakdown in oversight, with repair facilities potentially knowingly or unknowingly using substandard products.
Next Steps
NHTSA is now accepting public comments and allowing DTN an opportunity to dispute the ban. If upheld, the ruling would prevent further use of these deadly airbags in the United States. The agency urges vehicle owners who suspect they may have a DTN airbag to contact their local dealership for inspection.
The NHTSA’s action underscores the critical importance of using only certified auto parts. The consequences of cutting corners can be fatal.
