Bentley has issued a nationwide safety recall for its Bentayga Hybrid model due to a defect that could cause the high-voltage battery to overheat and potentially ignite a fire while the vehicle is charging.
The Issue
According to the recall notice, a hardware flaw allows the battery to discharge during charging, creating a risk of thermal runaway – where the battery overheats rapidly and can catch fire. This poses a direct threat of injury or death to occupants, bystanders, and other drivers, as well as potential property damage.
Scope of the Recall
The recall affects 16 Bentayga Hybrid vehicles produced in 2023. Owners are being contacted by Bentley to schedule a free software update at an authorized dealership. The company states that owners can continue using their vehicles until the repair is completed.
Recurring Fire Risks in Bentley Vehicles
This is not an isolated incident for the luxury automaker. Bentley has issued prior recalls for fire hazards:
- In July 2020, a recall was issued for 102 V8 models (2018-2020) due to fuel leaks.
- In August 2023, 159 W12 models (2015-2023) were recalled for the same reason.
These repeated incidents raise questions about Bentley’s quality control processes for fuel and electrical systems. The company has yet to comment on the commonality of these fire risks.
What Owners Should Do
If you own a 2023 Bentayga Hybrid, check your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) against the attached list to confirm if your vehicle is included in the recall. Contact your local Bentley dealer or visit their website to arrange a repair appointment.
The company has assured owners that the software update is free of charge and will resolve the fire hazard.
Despite its luxury branding, Bentley faces increasing scrutiny over recurring safety concerns, particularly those related to fire risks in its vehicles. The company’s response through recalls is a necessary step, but long-term improvements in quality control are critical to maintaining customer trust and preventing future incidents.
