Volkswagen has redesigned its best-selling Atlas SUV for the 2027 model year, addressing the need for a competitive update in the increasingly crowded three-row SUV segment. The changes include a more powerful engine, upgraded interior materials, and a modern infotainment system – but also some controversial tech choices.

Why This Matters

The Atlas is a key player for Volkswagen in the U.S., accounting for a significant portion of its SUV sales (which make up 80% of all VW sales as of 2025). The first-generation model, released nearly a decade ago, was beginning to show its age against newer rivals. This refresh isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about maintaining market share in a cutthroat category where consumers demand the latest features.

Exterior Updates: Shared DNA with China

The new Atlas shares a platform and exterior styling with the Chinese-market Teramont Pro, though Volkswagen has made minor tweaks. The front fascia and rear light bar are nearly identical, but the Atlas retains traditional physical door handles, unlike the Teramont’s electronic ones. The vehicle rides on an updated MQB platform, common across many Volkswagen Group vehicles, and will be available in three new colors: Sacramento Green, Blackberry, and Sandstone.

Interior Redesign: Tech-Forward, with Caveats

The interior has been thoroughly reworked. A standard 12.9-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, with an optional 15-inch upgrade available on higher trims. While the screen integrates the familiar (and sometimes criticized) haptic touch sliders for volume and climate controls, Volkswagen has retained a physical volume knob – a welcome compromise.

Higher trims feature real wood accents and Nappa leather upholstery. Despite the upgraded materials, piano black plastic remains prevalent, susceptible to fingerprints and smudging. Ambient LED lighting is integrated into the door cards and passenger-side dashboard, offering customizable color options. Additional tech includes two wireless MagSafe charging docks, USB-C ports in all rows, and available heated/ventilated seats with massaging functions for the front row.

Performance and Drivetrain

The new Atlas is powered by an updated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, boosting output to 282 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system available as an option. Pricing is expected to start in the mid-$40,000 range, with higher trims reaching nearly $55,000. The vehicle is slated to arrive in dealerships by Fall.

The Verdict

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas brings necessary improvements to a competitive segment. However, the absence of a hybrid option and the continued use of Volkswagen’s sometimes-clunky user interface and touch controls may deter some buyers. Despite these shortcomings, the Atlas represents a significant step forward for Volkswagen’s U.S. lineup.
