Porsche has reaffirmed its commitment to the all-electric versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars, dismissing recent speculation that the project might be canceled under new leadership. Despite internal challenges and shifting EV strategy, the electric models remain on track, with prototypes already undergoing testing.
Development Challenges and Leadership Shift
The development of the electric Boxster and Cayman hasn’t been without hurdles. Porsche initially aimed for a purely electric lineup, but later revised plans to include internal combustion engine (ICE) options for certain models. The arrival of new CEO Michael Leiters raised concerns, as he had reportedly considered scrapping the electric project altogether.
Prototype Testing and Driving Experience
Porsche Cars Australia’s managing director, Daniel Schmollinger, recently confirmed that the electric 718 models are still progressing. He has personally test-driven a prototype and described the experience as “amazing,” emphasizing its go-kart-like handling and improved dynamics due to the electric powertrain.
“I had the chance to drive it on a race track, and it was just amazing. A Boxster type of car should give you the weight distribution, a very go-kart feeling and it provides that. And with the electric engine, of course, it gives you even more dynamic driving.”
Hybrid Plans and Market Flexibility
Porsche is now considering offering both electric and ICE versions of the next-generation 718 models, including potential ICE options for more affordable trims. While no official announcement has been made, Schmollinger indicated that Porsche headquarters continually reevaluates its options, adapting to market conditions and technological advancements.
What This Means
The confirmation of electric Boxster and Cayman development suggests Porsche remains dedicated to electrifying its sports car lineup. The inclusion of ICE options provides flexibility, potentially catering to a wider range of buyers and mitigating risks associated with full EV transition. Porsche’s willingness to adapt ensures the 718 series will remain relevant in an evolving automotive landscape.
