Nissan has quietly unveiled a refreshed version of its Z sports car (sold as the Fairlady Z in Japan) at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. The update focuses on enhancing the model’s already strong retro aesthetic while delivering subtle aerodynamic improvements and minor interior tweaks.

Exterior Design Changes

The most noticeable changes are to the front fascia. Nissan has replaced the current Z’s angular grille with a wider, more cohesive design bisected by a body-color bar. This new bumper isn’t just about looks; it reduces front-end lift by 3.3% and drag by 1.0%, improving stability and efficiency.

The updated Z also ditches the Nissan corporate emblem for a prominent “Z” logo, further emphasizing its standalone identity. Two-tone alloy wheels and a new “Unryu Green” paint option – inspired by the original S30-generation Z’s “Grand Prix Green” – reinforce the car’s heritage-inspired design. Notably, the facelift model appears without the subtle rear boot lip spoiler found on earlier versions.

Mechanical and Interior Updates

Under the hood, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 remains unchanged, delivering 298kW (approximately 400 horsepower) and 475Nm of torque to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission. Suspension has been upgraded with larger piston shocks, and brakes have also been increased in size.

Inside, the biggest update is a new tan trim option for the seats, dashboard, and door cards. Interestingly, even the manual transmission variant shown includes paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

Nismo Variant on Display

Nissan also showcased the previously revealed manual Nismo version alongside the facelifted Z. The Nismo model retains its own more aggressive front bumper design, meaning it doesn’t receive the same visual updates as the standard facelift.

The updated Z will go on sale in Japan in mid-2026, with availability in other markets – including Australia – yet to be confirmed. This refresh isn’t a radical overhaul, but it strengthens the Z’s appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate a blend of classic styling and modern performance.
