Acura has teamed up with SEMA Garage to unveil the MDX Type S Overland concept, a one-off vehicle designed to explore the intersection of premium daily driving and rugged outdoor exploration. Set to debut at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, the concept serves as a proof-of-concept for how “purposeful” aftermarket modifications can transform a luxury crossover into an adventure-ready machine without losing its refined character.
Designed for the “Overland” Lifestyle
The term “overlanding” refers to self-reliant travel to remote destinations where the journey is as important as the destination. Traditionally, this requires heavy-duty, specialized vehicles. The MDX Type S Overland concept attempts to bring this lifestyle to a more mainstream, luxury-oriented platform.
To achieve this aesthetic and functional shift, the build includes several key upgrades:
– Rugged Footwear: The vehicle sits on 18-inch bronze Black Rhino wheels wrapped in Falken WildPeak all-terrain tires, providing better grip on unpaved surfaces.
– Camping Readiness: A Prinsu roof rack supports an Overland Stargazer Duo tent. To mitigate the weight penalty of rooftop camping, the tent is constructed from lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum.
– Utility and Visibility: The concept features a Baja Design light bar for enhanced night driving and a rear tire carrier equipped with a jerry can for extra fuel capacity.
Performance and Capability
Under the hood, the concept retains the high-performance DNA of the standard MDX Type S. It is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine producing 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system.
While these specifications provide plenty of power for highway cruising and light trail work, it is important to note the vehicle’s intended limits. This is not a dedicated rock crawler designed for the extreme terrain of Moab; rather, it is a “soft-roader” optimized for gravel paths, forest roads, and camping sites.
The Core Philosophy: Integration over Extremity
The primary goal of this collaboration between Acura and SEMA is not to create a hardcore off-roader, but to demonstrate integration. The project aims to show enthusiasts how aftermarket parts—ranging from lighting to sleeping quarters—can be seamlessly integrated into a modern OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) platform.
The concept seeks to prove that a vehicle can support off-road adventures while maintaining the comfort and refinement expected of a premium brand.
Conclusion
The MDX Type S Overland concept acts as a functional showcase for how luxury crossovers can be adapted for outdoor enthusiasts. It highlights a growing trend where drivers seek versatile vehicles that can transition from a professional daily commute to a weekend wilderness escape.
