Hyundai Recalls Over 568,000 Palisades Due to Airbag Defect

Hyundai is recalling 568,576 Palisade SUVs from the 2020 to 2025 model years because of a dangerous defect in their third-row side-curtain airbags. These airbags may not deploy correctly in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to passengers seated in the vehicle’s rearmost row.

The Problem: Airbag Failure in Crash Tests

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated the recall after multiple compliance tests revealed that the side-curtain airbags failed to restrain a crash test dummy adequately. During testing, the dummy’s head exceeded safety limits, indicating the airbags may not provide sufficient protection in a real-world collision.

The issue came to light between April and December 2025, when Hyundai and the NHTSA conducted several tests that consistently showed the airbags were ineffective in securing third-row passengers. This is not the first recall for the Palisade: last September, a separate recall was issued due to a seatbelt malfunction. The current issue may affect the same vehicles.

What Hyundai Is Doing: Remedy Under Development

As of now, Hyundai does not have a fix for the defective airbags but is actively developing one. Once the remedy is available, all repairs will be performed free of charge to vehicle owners. Hyundai has yet to provide a specific timeline for when the fix will be released.

Why This Matters: Passenger Safety and Regulatory Scrutiny

This recall underscores the critical importance of vehicle safety testing and regulatory oversight. Side-curtain airbags are designed to protect occupants from head injuries during side impacts. Their failure can have severe consequences, particularly for third-row passengers who are often children or other vulnerable individuals.

Hyundai’s repeated recalls for the Palisade also raise questions about the automaker’s quality control processes. While recalls are a necessary part of ensuring vehicle safety, frequent issues can erode consumer trust and invite greater scrutiny from regulators.

Hyundai owners should monitor for updates on the recall and contact their local dealership for more information when a fix becomes available. The company will notify affected owners directly when the remedy is ready.
