Great Wall Motor’s Haval brand has released the H6L, a mid-size SUV powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Priced between $16,500 and $19,900, the H6L represents an upgrade in performance for Haval’s popular H6 series, but arrives at a time when the internal combustion engine market is in decline.
Larger Dimensions, Enhanced Comfort
The H6L is noticeably larger than its predecessor, measuring 4,800mm long, 1,895mm wide, and 1,730mm high with a 2,810mm wheelbase. This represents a significant increase over the standard H6, adding 97mm in length and 72mm to the wheelbase. The expanded size translates to more interior space and comfort, with options for heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats. Rear passengers benefit from adjustable recline angles (27 and 32 degrees).
Performance and Technology
Under the hood, the 2.0T engine delivers 235 horsepower and 385 N·m of torque, paired with a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission. Haval claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.2 seconds and a combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km. A 1.5T engine option remains available for buyers seeking a more economical choice.
The interior features a 14.6-inch central control screen, a Head-Up Display (HUD), and Great Wall Motor’s Coffee OS 3 infotainment system. The H6L also incorporates Level 2 assisted driving features and intelligent parking capable of handling over 200 parking scenarios.
Market Context and Challenges
The Haval H6 has historically been a strong seller for the brand, but the automotive landscape is shifting rapidly. While the 2.0T engine addresses performance concerns with earlier 1.5T models, the H6L launches into a market increasingly dominated by electric vehicles.
The timing of the release raises questions about its long-term viability. Traditional gasoline-powered SUVs face growing regulatory pressure and declining consumer interest in many regions. The success of the H6L will depend on its ability to compete in a shrinking segment and appeal to buyers who still prioritize internal combustion engines.
The H6L’s launch represents a gamble for Haval: an attempt to extract maximum value from gasoline technology before the transition to EVs becomes irreversible. Whether it can reclaim the H6’s former glory remains to be seen
