Electric vehicle (EV) drivers face a trade-off familiar to all motorists: speed versus efficiency. While faster speeds get you there quicker, they also consume more energy, impacting range and costs. In the EV world, this equation is further complicated by limited real-world range in some models and the current gaps in rapid-charging infrastructure.
The Range Penalty of Speed
A recent test by the Carwire YouTube channel demonstrates how drastically speed affects an EV’s efficiency. Using a Tesla Model Y, the channel conducted runs at 50, 60, 70, and 80 mph along a 30-mile loop to measure Wh/mile efficiency. The results are telling:
- 50 mph: Offers an impressive 333-mile range and a four-hour trip time for 200 miles.
- 60 mph: Shaves 40 minutes off the trip, with a 300-mile range.
- 70 mph: Cuts another half-hour, but drops the range to 248 miles.
- 80 mph: The worst efficiency, delivering just 204 miles of range, making it a risky choice for longer journeys.
The tests show that while higher speeds reduce travel time, they do so at the cost of range, potentially forcing drivers to stop and charge, negating any time savings.
The Sweet Spot: 60-70 mph
The Carwire analysis suggests the most efficient speed range for highway driving is between 60 and 70 mph. At this pace, drivers can balance travel time and range comfortably. Pushing beyond 70 mph dramatically reduces efficiency, making it impractical for long trips without frequent charging stops.
Why This Matters
This dynamic isn’t just about convenience. EV range anxiety is a real barrier to adoption, and understanding how speed impacts efficiency helps drivers plan trips more effectively. As charging infrastructure improves and battery technology advances, this equation will shift, but for now, driving at moderate speeds remains the most sensible approach for EV users.
The need to optimize speed versus range also highlights the importance of future charger rollouts. Until ultra-fast charging is more widespread, prioritizing efficiency will remain crucial for a stress-free EV experience.
