The search for festive cheer doesn’t always require a pilgrimage to Bethlehem or the North Pole. Sometimes, it’s hidden in the unexpected corners of the British countryside — and in surprisingly named streets within London. A recent automotive excursion took one route to explore this idea, using the Hyundai Santa Fe plug-in hybrid as its vehicle.
The Scatter Rally Concept
The trip was conceived as a playful “scatter rally,” a format popular among car clubs where participants race to find obscure locations, document details, and compete for accuracy. This approach transformed a potentially frivolous journey into a structured challenge, adding an element of competitive discovery to the holiday-themed exploration.
Chestnut Avenue and the North Pole
The journey began not at the North Pole itself, but at Chestnut Avenue in Bushy Park, near Twickenham. The road has been closed to through traffic, forcing the team to loop around a central pond, observing Canada geese and amused onlookers mistaking deer for reindeer. From there, the team headed to a North Pole-branded pub in Greenwich, only to find it closed with a history of local incidents. A brief encounter with a skeptical bartender yielded no snow reports and a hasty exit.
Turkey Street and Santa Pod
The expedition continued to Turkey Street in Enfield, where a functional train station and bustling shops provided a fitting backdrop for photos. The team then drove to Santa Pod Raceway, a drag racing venue in Milton Keynes. The site’s atmosphere was described as dynamic, with muscle cars and an immaculate burnout pad offering a thrilling visual experience.
Christmas Common and Rural Serenity
The final destination was Christmas Common in Oxfordshire, a picturesque village surrounded by scenic countryside. The area’s residents are protective of their rural atmosphere, with road signs discouraging disturbances to the peace. Despite this, the team managed to capture photos near a stable with donkeys, although one animal was too unwell to participate in the shoot.
The essence of the journey lay in its absurdity and charm. The expedition highlighted how unexpected locations can embody the spirit of Christmas, even if the encounters are fleeting, humorous, or slightly unsettling. The blend of automotive exploration, seasonal whimsy, and local quirks created a unique experience that underscored the enduring appeal of unconventional traditions.
