MG Motor is preparing to significantly expand its plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offerings with the introduction of a PHEV version of the popular ZS small SUV, slated for release in 2026. This move comes as demand for PHEVs steadily increases, and MG seeks to capitalize on a growing market segment.
Rising Demand for PHEVs Fuels Expansion
According to David Allison, head of product and planning at MG Motor UK, PHEV demand is “creeping up,” prompting the brand to introduce more plug-in hybrid models. While acknowledging that smaller city cars aren’t well-suited for PHEV powertrains, MG is focusing on the small SUV segment, viewing it as the “next natural thing to do.” Currently, PHEVs are largely confined to C-segment hatchbacks and larger vehicles, with MG aiming to fill a gap in the market.
ZS PHEV: A Competitive Offering
The ZS PHEV will directly compete with the BYD Atto 2 DM-i, which currently dominates the small plug-in hybrid market. It will slot into MG’s PHEV range alongside the larger HS and the upcoming MGS9 flagship model. While the ZS PHEV is unlikely to match the HS’s 75-mile electric-only range, MG aims for a competitive 60-mile electric range to challenge the top-spec BYD.
Pricing and Market Position
Based on the pricing of the existing HS PHEV, the ZS PHEV is expected to command a 10% premium over its hybrid counterpart. This could translate to a starting price of around £25,000 for the entry-level SE trim, aligning with the predicted price of BYD’s base-spec Atto 2 DM-i.
MG’s Hybrid Success
MG has already seen considerable success with its hybrid offerings, with 44.8% of its 2024 sales consisting of MG3, MG ZS, and MG HS hybrids. The HS PHEV alone accounted for 8.8% of total MG sales last year. This momentum reinforces the brand’s commitment to expanding its electrified lineup.
MG’s strategic expansion into the small PHEV segment is a calculated move to capture a growing market share. The ZS PHEV will offer a competitive, affordable option for consumers seeking an efficient and versatile plug-in hybrid SUV.
