Kia Drops V6 Engines in Australia Amidst Emissions Crackdown

Kia Australia is phasing out petrol V6 engines in its Carnival minivan and Sorento SUV models due to tightening government emissions standards. The move, driven by the new New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) that came into effect January 1st, effectively limits availability of these powertrains to remaining dealer stock, expected to be depleted by the end of March.

New Regulations Force Change

The NVES introduces stricter CO2 emissions caps: reducing the target for passenger vehicles from 141g/km to 117g/km. The V6 Sorento FWD, for example, emits 222g/km, exceeding the new limits. By contrast, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions fall well within the standards, emitting between 37-129g/km.

This shift isn’t just about compliance. The Australian government’s push for lower emissions has, ironically, improved supply of Kia’s electrified models. Previously constrained by production bottlenecks, these vehicles are now more readily available as the brand prioritizes meeting the new regulations.

Price Increases Inevitable

The elimination of the V6 will push up entry prices for both vehicles. The Sorento Hybrid FWD carries a $5,000 premium over the former V6 FWD, while the plug-in hybrid version is nearly $20,000 more expensive. The Carnival Hybrid also sees a price increase of $4,000 over the discontinued V6.

The change underscores a growing trend: automakers globally are streamlining production to focus on more efficient powertrains as regulations tighten. The situation in Australia is a clear example of how emissions standards directly impact consumer choices, forcing buyers toward hybrid or electric options—whether by preference or necessity.
