Hyundai Motor America has issued a safety recall for 294,128 vehicles due to a defect involving the front seatbelt anchors. The issue poses a significant safety risk, as the anchors may not be securely attached to the vehicle’s frame, potentially causing them to detach during use.
The Scope of the Recall
The recall specifically targets high-end and electric models produced within recent years. The affected vehicles include:
- Genesis G90: 2023–2026 models
- Hyundai Ioniq 6: 2023–2025 models
- Hyundai Santa Fe: 2024–2026 models
Identifying the Root Cause
Following an investigation launched in September 2025, Hyundai determined that the issue stems from damaged “snap-on” anchors. These components may fail to attach sufficiently to the seat frame, compromising the integrity of the restraint system.
Crucially, Hyundai’s internal review suggests that the damage is not a result of user error or external accidents. Instead, the automaker believes the anchors were likely compromised during:
1. Initial manufacturing/installation
2. Routine vehicle maintenance
3. General repair work
This finding highlights a critical vulnerability in the assembly and service chain, where even minor physical damage during routine mechanical work can lead to a catastrophic failure of a primary safety system.
Safety Impact and Resolution
As of the current report, Hyundai has identified six incidents involving insufficiently attached anchors. However, the company has confirmed there have been no reported injuries, fatalities, or crashes linked to this defect.
To rectify the situation, Hyundai will implement the following steps:
– Owner Notification: Affected customers will be notified via first-class mail.
– Inspection and Repair: Service technicians will inspect the anchor assemblies.
– Remedy: Depending on the findings, technicians will either install a reinforcement remedy or replace the entire seatbelt assembly.
