The Chinese automaker GAC has unveiled its S7 plug-in hybrid SUV in Australia, positioning it as a potential competitor to the popular Toyota Kluger. The vehicle was showcased at GAC’s Australian launch event in Sydney, with plans for a possible market release as early as 2026.

Expanding Footprint in Australia

GAC is entering the Australian market with three initial models: the Emzoom small SUV, the Aion V mid-size electric SUV, and the M8 seven-seat people mover. The S7 is considered for launch next year as part of an aggressive expansion strategy, aiming for an eight-model lineup by 2029, including a dual-cab ute. GAC plans to grow its dealership network from 12 locations on the east coast to 100 nationwide, with ambitions to become a top 10 auto brand in Australia by 2030.

Design and Dimensions

The S7 features a distinctive exterior design, highlighted by a 2.6-meter-wide LED light band powered by artificial intelligence for dynamic lighting effects. With dimensions of 4900mm long, 1950mm wide, and 1780mm tall, the S7 closely matches the Kluger in size (4966/1930/1755mm). The S7 has a slightly longer wheelbase despite being shorter overall.

Performance and Hybrid System

The S7 utilizes a car-like monocoque construction, unlike some off-road SUVs that use body-on-frame designs. The hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (118kW/220Nm) with one or two electric motors. Single-motor variants deliver 170kW/470Nm and an 82km electric range with a 21.3kWh battery, extending to 145km with a larger 36.1kWh battery. Dual-motor, four-wheel-drive versions boost output to 250kW/393Nm and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds. GAC claims an 80% charge in 30 minutes using DC fast-charging.

Interior and Technology

The S7 offers a spacious interior with 720 liters of cargo space (2050 liters with the rear seats folded) but does not have a seven-seat configuration. It includes a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 60W wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof. Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) such as autonomous emergency braking and semi-autonomous driving capabilities are standard.

Market Positioning

The S7 is sold under the Trumpchi brand in China, but all models in Australia will be sold under the GAC badge. This move indicates GAC’s commitment to establishing a unified brand identity in the Australian market.

The GAC S7 represents a significant step in the expansion of Chinese automakers into the Australian market, offering a competitive alternative to established brands like Toyota and Mitsubishi. Its combination of plug-in hybrid technology, advanced features, and competitive pricing may attract consumers looking for a modern, efficient SUV.
