The Zeekr 009, a luxury electric minivan from Geely, is set to receive a substantial power upgrade in the Chinese market, with a new variant boasting 912 horsepower (680 kW). Details emerged through government regulatory filings, suggesting the vehicle will likely be unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show later this year. This development highlights the intensifying competition in China’s high-performance EV sector.
Evolution of the Zeekr 009
First launched in 2023, the Zeekr 009 initially offered a 536 hp dual-motor setup. A 2024 update introduced an 800V system alongside two powertrain options: a 416 hp front-wheel-drive version and a 778 hp all-wheel-drive model. The impending release of the 912 hp variant underscores a clear trend toward higher-powered EVs, driven by consumer demand and technological advancements.
Key Specifications and Design
The updated Zeekr 009 retains its distinctive exterior styling, featuring a prominent chrome grille, unique running lights, power sliding doors, and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. It measures 5,217 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, and 1,812 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm. Interior configurations include 6-seat (2+2+2) and 7-seat (2+2+3) layouts. The vehicle will ride on either 19 or 20-inch wheels and weigh between 2,850 and 2,910 kg, depending on the powertrain.
Performance and Charging Capabilities
The core upgrade lies in the powertrain, now operating on a 900V high-voltage system, similar to that found in the Zeekr 001 liftback. This allows for more efficient energy discharge, resulting in the peak output of 912 hp, generated by a combined 416 hp front motor and 496 hp rear motor.
While battery capacity remains undisclosed, the vehicle uses a ternary NMC pack supplied by a CATL-Geely joint venture. The 900V architecture enables 12C charging rates, reducing recharge times from 10% to 80% to just 7 minutes. Zeekr operates over 2,100 charging stations capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW, aligning with the ultra-fast charging capabilities pioneered by BYD.
The race for EV performance in China is accelerating, with manufacturers pushing boundaries on power and charging speeds. The Zeekr 009’s 912 hp variant demonstrates this trend, positioning it as a top contender in the luxury electric minivan segment.
The rapid adoption of high-voltage systems and ultra-fast charging infrastructure is reshaping the automotive landscape, and the Zeekr 009 is at the forefront of this transformation.
