Mercedes-Benz is preparing a substantial mid-cycle update for its flagship S-Class sedan, set to debut on January 29th. The refresh includes over 2,700 revised or new components—more than half the vehicle—making it one of the most extensive facelifts in the model’s history.

Powertrain Enhancements

The most significant changes are under the hood. The S450 and S500 will receive an updated inline-six engine (“M256 Evo”) delivering 443 lb-ft of torque, a 30 lb-ft increase over the outgoing model, with an overboost function temporarily raising output to 472 lb-ft.

For those opting for the S580, the engine now features a flat-plane-crank V8 (“M177 Evo”), similar to the AMG GT Black Series. This engine produces 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque—gains of 34 hp and 37 lb-ft, respectively. The new firing order, improved injection, and revised intake/exhaust ports also improve efficiency.

The S580e plug-in hybrid sees a combined output increase of 74 hp, and the battery is estimated to deliver over 62 miles of electric range (WLTP cycle).

Emissions Compliance and Hybridization

All gasoline variants will feature particulate filters and pressurized fuel tanks. Diesel models (S350d, S450d) receive the “OM 656 Evo” to meet stricter emission standards. Mercedes is also pioneering an electrically heated catalytic converter for faster pollutant reduction during cold starts. All engines benefit from mild-hybrid technology via a 48-volt system.

Chassis and Suspension Upgrades

Rear-wheel steering is now standard, with a 4.5-degree setup. A 10-degree system remains optional, reducing the turning circle significantly. The air suspension has been refined for a smoother ride, now using cloud-based data from other Mercedes vehicles to anticipate road irregularities and adjust damping proactively.

Design and Market Trends

The exterior design includes an updated three-pointed star motif integrated into the headlights and taillights, following recent Mercedes models. The S-Class remains a key model for Mercedes, with one in three global sales being Maybach variants. In China, the long-wheelbase version accounts for half of all S-Class sales.

The S-Class facelift breaks cover on January 29, with the Maybach variant following later this year.

Competition and Outlook

The Mercedes S-Class faces limited competition as rivals such as the Lexus LS are being phased out and the Audi A8’s future is uncertain. The Genesis G90 remains a competitor. Despite criticisms of the current W223 generation’s interior, Mercedes appears unlikely to revert to a more traditional dashboard layout. The updated S-Class is a major investment by Mercedes in maintaining its flagship sedan in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs.
