MG Motor has unveiled the 4X, a more rugged, crossover-style variant of its popular 4 EV and 4 EV Urban electric hatchbacks. This move signals MG’s intent to broaden its EV offerings and attract a wider customer base.
Design and Dimensions
The 4X measures 4.4 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.6 meters tall – making it slightly smaller than the MG S5 EV currently available in the UK market. Notably, the vehicle features a design that deviates from the more recent Cyberster-inspired front grille seen on other MG models. This suggests a deliberate effort to differentiate the 4X within the brand’s lineup.
Battery Tech: A Leap Forward
A key highlight of the 4X is its adoption of semi-solid-state batteries. These advanced batteries combine solid and liquid-gel electrolytes, offering improved energy density and enhanced performance in extreme temperatures. While details are still emerging, the 53.95kWh pack is projected to deliver a range of 317 miles (based on China’s CLTC testing standard, which tends to overestimate actual range).
This is significant: Semi-solid-state technology represents a step towards safer, more efficient electric vehicle batteries. The technology addresses some of the instability risks associated with traditional liquid-electrolyte designs, while also improving thermal management for longer lifespan and quicker charging.
Interior and Market Strategy
The interior of the 4X will feature digital interfaces developed in collaboration with smartphone manufacturer Oppo, hinting at a tech-focused experience. MG is initially targeting younger buyers in China, but whether the 4X will be sold in the UK remains uncertain.
The bigger picture: The 4X’s arrival could cannibalize sales from the existing MG S5 crossover, as both vehicles compete in the same segment. The expansion of the 4 family demonstrates MG’s commitment to EV growth, but also raises questions about internal competition within its own portfolio.
