Kia has issued a recall affecting nearly 15,000 vehicles – including the newly released 2027 Telluride and the 2026 K4 – due to a potential defect in the rear seat belt buckles. The issue centers on the anchor buckle mechanism, which may not properly latch, raising safety concerns for passengers.

The Problem and Affected Vehicles

A total of 14,870 vehicles are impacted, with the majority (13,499) being the 2027 Kia Telluride. The defect affects the rear center seat belt in the K4 and the third-row center seat belt in the Telluride. Kia identified the problem internally in February when its Georgia plant found issues with the third-row center seat buckle latching reliably.

The root cause traces back to incorrect assembly by Samsong Mexico, a supplier providing the anchor buckles. Since the same part was used in both models, Kia opted for a simultaneous recall to avoid further complications. Critically, no injuries or field reports of failures have been logged so far.

How Kia Will Fix It

Dealers will inspect and replace the affected anchor buckle assemblies as needed. The process involves technicians disassembling the seat belt buckle to verify the spring tab is correctly seated against the anchor point; if not, it will be replaced.

Why This Matters

This recall is particularly notable because the 2027 Telluride just entered dealerships last month. The timing is unfortunate given the model’s strong initial sales, which surged 37.5% last month to over 13,000 units. The recall has triggered a stop-sale order, temporarily halting deliveries until the inspection process can be completed.

For dealerships, the fix appears straightforward: inspect, and if clear, deliver. However, the incident underscores the importance of rigorous quality control in automotive manufacturing, especially with new models. While the recall is a setback, its swift execution should minimize disruption for buyers.

Kia’s quick response to the issue suggests a proactive approach to safety, even for a newly launched vehicle. The company’s internal discovery and immediate action should reassure customers that they are prioritizing passenger safety.
