BYD has unveiled the official images of its Linghui M9, a mid-to-large multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) specifically designed for the ride-hailing and taxi markets. This new model expands BYD’s Linghui sub-brand, which targets commercial fleet customers with both electric and plug-in hybrid options.
Linghui Brand Overview
Launched earlier this month, Linghui operates as a dedicated line within BYD’s broader vehicle offerings. The brand is split into “e” and “M” series: the “e” series comprising all-electric models (e5, e7, e9) and the “M” series currently consisting only of the plug-in hybrid M9. This division allows BYD to cater to varied operational needs, from zero-emission urban driving to longer-range, fuel-efficient applications.
Design and Dimensions
The Linghui M9’s exterior shares strong similarities with the popular BYD Xia DM-i, though it features distinct Linghui branding and subtle design tweaks. The front grille, rear “Chinese knot” taillights, and chrome accents are all present, but with slight modifications to differentiate the models.
- Dimensions: The M9 measures 5200 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3045 mm. This makes it 55 mm longer than the BYD Xia DM-i, while retaining the same width and height. The vehicle’s curb weight is 2,470 kg.
- Optional Features: Buyers can choose between a single sunroof or a dual-sunroof configuration, along with options for privacy glass and integrated camera systems for enhanced safety and fleet management.
Powertrain Details
The Linghui M9 is powered by a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5T engine (BYD472ZQB) with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (TZ210XYD) and BYD’s Blade battery technology. The engine delivers 115 kW (154 hp), while the motor produces 200 kW (268 hp)—the same specifications as the BYD Xia DM-i.
The battery capacity remains unspecified, but the BYD Xia DM-i, a related model, features a 20.39 kWh Blade battery pack that provides a CLTC pure electric range of 100 km. This suggests that the M9 will offer comparable all-electric driving capabilities, reducing fuel consumption and emissions in urban environments.
Market Implications
The Linghui M9’s launch underscores BYD’s strategic move to dominate the growing ride-hailing and commercial vehicle segments. The specialized nature of the Linghui brand, coupled with the cost-effectiveness of plug-in hybrid technology, makes it an attractive option for fleet operators. This expansion also reflects the increasing demand for purpose-built vehicles in the transportation industry, where durability, efficiency, and low operating costs are paramount.
