Know your vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight (GCWR)

Tell me the truth. We all know the basics. horsepower. torque. From zero to sixty. You probably know what these mean because they determine how your car feels on the road. Interior space, legroom and fuel efficiency are easy to understand. These are the numbers you need to confirm before signing the document. They tell you what you get for your money.

But there are blind spots.

Most buyers overlook the heavier and more dangerous aspects of trailers. More specifically, Total Weight Rating. If you plan to tow a trailer, it would be a mistake to ignore this number. This is more than just a suggestion. This is a strict limit set by engineers designing vehicle powertrains.

What is GCWR and how is it calculated?

This word sounds bureaucratic. This is But the risks are clear.

Combined total weight determines the maximum permissible weight of a loaded tractor and a loaded trailer. This is not the actual weight. This is the ceiling. If you exceed this value, you are operating outside the safety parameters specified by the manufacturer.

Think of this as gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). However, it targets two different units. The difference is the complexity. GVWR covers the machine. GCWR covers the connection between the two.

Ford analyzes the math clearly. Just don’t guess. Add the following:

  • Vehicle weight
  • Allow payload
  • Weight of driver and passenger
  • Trailer weight

The result is the total load. The total load must be kept below the GCWR limit.

Why are there restrictions?

Security is not a feature. This is a requirement.

Overloading the trailer is dangerous. Overloading the tractor is dangerous. Using both at the same time can cause a mechanical failure.

When you push the boundaries, physics comes into play. The brakes are hot. It fades. Brake power is lost. The tire cracked under the pressure. Suspension parts are bent or damaged. The engine and transmission overheated due to the constant strain of moving their own weight.

The component has failed. And one more thing. When this happens, you lose control.

GCWR prevents this cascade. This ensures that the brakes, tires and transmission can handle the associated kinetic energy.

Where to check your ratings

No need to call the manufacturer. The information is built into the car.

Look for the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door frame. This is where the latch locks. Restrictions are listed on the label. Printed on metal or durable vinyl. It stays there for the entire life of the car.

If you can’t find your sticker, check online. Most manufacturers publish this information. This is part of their responsible governance. They want you to know your limits.

Acura GCWR data

If you drive an Acura, towing capacity varies greatly by model and year. This is the change of the last few years.

2006 Acura model

*Note: RDX did not have a towing rating in 2006. TL and TSX ratings were relatively stable in 2007-2008, but fluctuated slightly in 2009. *

Audi GCWR data

Audi’s range continues to expand. Most sedans and coupes are not suitable for carrying heavy loads. The Q7 is an exception.

2006 Audi model

  • A3, A4, A6, A8, S4, TT : No towing rating

2007 Audi model

  • Q7 : £10,665.
  • A3, A4, A6, A8, RS4, S4, S6, S8 : No towing rating

2008 Audi model

  • Q7 : £10,665.
  • A3, A4, A5, A6, A8, R8, RS4, S4, S5, S6, S8, TT : No towing rating

2009 Audi model

  • Q7 : £10,665.
  • A3, A4, A5, A8, R8, S4, S5, S8, TT : No towing rating

*The R8 was under-rated when it was introduced in 2009, probably due to its sports car configuration and low ground clearance. *

Conclusion

The numbers don’t lie. But if you don’t know what to look for, you can get confused.

You know your horsepower. You know MPG, right? But do you know about GCWR?

It’s more than just a number. It’s the line between safe travel and towing. Check the sticker. Check the diagram. Don’t guess.

More information can be found on the next page. But now weigh in on the trailer. Weigh passengers. Please add more. Stay within limits.

Or don’t. The choice is yours. Not so in physics.

BMW GCWR

BMW’s German engineering is very precise, but knowing the gross vehicle weight rating (GCWR) can help prevent seal damage when hitching up a trailer. Here we focus on models from 2006-2009. Missing information usually means that the model has not received two ratings or the rating is not listed in the standard consumer guide.

2006 BMW
Sporty Stuff does not publish reviews. These include 325, 330, 525, 530, 550, 650, 750, 760, M3, M5, M6, Z4, Z4M. If you use one of these trailers, check the sticker on the door frame. The number may differ from the number indicated in the brochure.

SUVs tell a different data. The X3 weighs 7,673 lbs. The X5 is a 10,802 lb heavy lifter.

2007 BMW
The sedan’s data gap is still open. M5 and M6 are still unlisted. Alpina B7 also joins the list, but GCWR data is not published.

The X3 drops slightly to 7,662 lbs. The X5 fares well and tops out at 11,132 lbs.

2008 BMW
BMW is expanding its product range. 128, 135, 328, 528, 535, 550, 650, 750, 760, Alpina B7, M3 and Z4 do not include GCWR. Z4M is not yet available.

The X3 is weighs 7,662 lbs. The weight capacity of the X5 is 11,132 lbs. The new X6 is rated at 11,044 lbs.

2009 BMW
No data available for 128, 135, 328, 335, 528, 535, 550, 750, M3, M5, M6, Z4, Z4M.

The X3 is still 7,662 lbs. X5 weight drops to 11,066 lbs. The weight capacity of the X6 is 11,044 lbs.

BMW towing restrictions

If a specific BMW model is not listed, it is assumed that it does not have towing capability unless otherwise stated in the owner’s manual.

Buick GCWR

Buick kept things simple during this time. The list is dominated by medium-sized sedans and small crossover SUVs.

2006 Buick
A LaCrosse is 4,645 lbs. Lucerne is a bit heavier and weighs in at 4,914 pounds.

In SUVs, the weight increases. Rainier can handle 10,500 lbs. The Rendezvous has a payload capacity of 7,746 lbs. Terraza rated at 8,500 lbs.

2007 Buick
La Crosse and Lucerne did not change their ratings. 4,645 lbs and 4,914 lbs.

Rainier and Rendezvous maintained their positions at 10,500 lbs and 7,746 lbs. Terraza was removed from the lineup.

2008 Buick
Enclave arrives. Offers 9,500 lbs GCWR. Lacrosse and Lucerne are no different.

2009 Buick
Same data. The Enclave weighs 9,500 lbs. The LaCrosse and Lucerne are still 4,645 lbs and £4,914 respectively.

Cadillac GCWR

Cadillac trucks and luxury SUVs carry heavy loads. The numbers vary greatly between the V model and the hybrid model.

2006 Cadillac
The CTS is rated at 4,659 lbs. The CTS-V ups that to 5,000 lbs. The DTS weighs 5,159 lbs.

The Escalade family is huge. The standard Escalade weighs 12,902 lbs. The longer ESV version weighs 14,000 lbs. EXT pickup models are rated at 13,464 lbs. SRX Crossover Weight 5,314 lbs. £5,008 for the STS and 5,383 lbs for the STS-V. XLR and XLR-V are not rated.

2007 Cadillac
CTS, CTS-V and DTS ratings are static. 4,659, 5,000, 5,159 lbs.

The Escalade configuration is even more complete. Standard, ESV and EXT models now share a 14,000 lb GCWR. The SRX grows to 6,314 lbs. STS is 5,079 lbs, STS-V is 5,544 lbs.

2008 Cadillac
The CTS has improved slightly to 5,011 lbs. DTS is still 5,159 lbs.

Ford heavy metal and family transporters

Ford’s lineup of this era told the narrative of a company trying to bridge the gap between workhorses and suburban comfort. Super trucks are the mainstay here. A 2006 Ford F-250 or F-350 has a GCWR of 15,000 lbs. By 2007, the figure had risen to 17,000 lbs. This is important if you plan to tow a heavy trailer or gooseneck unit. The E-Series van followed a similar upward trajectory. From 2006 to 2009, the E-350 Super Duty’s weight remained stable at 13,000 lbs. The lightweight E-150 and E-250 models weigh around 11,000 to 11,500 pounds.

The F-150 is tough. In 2006 it was valued at 11,665 lbs. By 2009, the figure had nearly doubled to 14,950 lbs. The sharp increase between 2008 (11,765 lbs.) and 2009 (14,950 lbs.) suggests a significant lineup change, possibly with new engine options or frame stiffness upgrades. If you own a mid-2000s F-150, check the sticker on the door frame. The general dimensions do not necessarily correspond to certain axle ratios.

Those who moved with their families tell a different narrative. The 2006 Explorer weighs 7,700 pounds. Weight increased to 8,500 pounds for the 2007 model year and remained the same for 2008. The Expedition EL is a long-wheelbase version of the Expedition, which maxed out at 15,078 pounds in 2007 and 2008. The Escape Hybrid’s towing capacity is significantly lighter. The 2006 Escape Hybrid GCWR weighs 4,777 lbs. By 2009, this weight will rise to 4,788 pounds. Don’t expect to tow a boat with these unless you are talking about a small aluminum boat.

Small cars are almost non-existent. Small cars sometimes appear. The 2007 Mustang has a GCWR of 4,611 lbs. This is hardly enough to fit the fuel tank and two passengers in the car itself. Focus and Fusion data are often missing, which usually means the manufacturer doesn’t offer a specific traction or GCWR rating for these configurations, or they have virtually no capacity for heavy loads.

GMC flagship products and luxury SUVs

GMC focuses on the practical Sierra line and the premium Yukon line. The Sierra 3500 is the big rig here. In 2006 it was valued at 15,792 lbs. By 2008, it weighed 16,000 pounds. The Sierra 2500 follows around 15,858 lbs from 2007-2009. These figures are important if you are towing a heavy drawbar.

The Yukon series is more stable than Ford’s Super Duty, but has slightly less power. The top price for the 2006 Yukon XL is 13,000 lbs. The Yukon’s standard curb weight was 11,000 pounds in 2006, but has dropped to 10,000 pounds over the years. From 2008 to 2009, the weight of the Yukon Hybrid remained stable at 12,000 lbs. Note that the weight of the 2009 Yukon XL has dropped to 11,000 pounds, a significant decrease from the previous year. This may mean that a drivetrain package or engine configuration change is available for that model year.

Canyon and Acadia are mid-range choices. The Canyon started at 5,179 pounds in 2006 and went up to 5,887 pounds in 2009. The Acadia was pegged at 9,500 pounds from 2007 to 2009. If you don’t want to own a huge Airstream, this is a good number for a mid-size crossover. The Envoy is an old model that was phased out until 2009 and has a curb weight of around 10,000 pounds.

Savana is the backbone of the business. From 2006 to 2009, the 2500 and 3500 were always priced at 12,000 lbs. The 1500 model is a light 9,500 pounds. These limitations are severe when the Savana is converted to a shuttle or cargo vehicle. These cannot be exceeded. If the limit is exceeded, you could void your warranty or risk a structural failure.

Honda’s reliability and efficiency

Honda’s GCWR numbers tend to be conservative. They prioritize longevity over raw power. The Ridgeline is abnormal. In 2006, it weighed 9,653 pounds, rising to 10,085 pounds in 2007 and 2008. It’s a unibody truck, so it would be a mistake to think of it as a chassis-mounted F-150. Stay within your limits.

The pilots also performed excellently. The 2007 and 2008 models weigh 9,700 pounds. By 2009, that number had dropped to 8,466 pounds. This decrease may be due to redesign or changes to standard equipment. From 2007 to 2009, the Odyssey’s weight remained stable at around 8,000 to 8,210 pounds. Even if it’s a minivan, you can transport your bike in a small utility trailer or transporter.

Civic and Accord are not tractors. The 2007 Civic weighs 6,060 pounds, which is surprisingly high for a compact car, but that includes the weight of the car and the weight of passengers and cargo. The actual towing capacity is likely to be much less than this, perhaps less than 1000 pounds. CR-V and Insight markings are often absent or absent. The Insight is a hybrid designed for efficiency, with a 2006 GCWR of just 2,250 pounds. I could hardly carry it to the machine shop.

Element is a niche player. The 2006 and 2007 models have a weight capacity of about 5,000 pounds and are not designed for heavy duty use. If you see big numbers for a Honda of this era, check the source. Honda rarely over-promises when it comes to towing.

The heavy footprints of a legacy

Hummer doesn’t play the middle ground. The H2 and H3 are designed to last rather than boost. From 2006 to 2009, the weight of the H3 remained stable at 8,000 pounds. This is a qualified off-road vehicle, but due to GCWR restrictions it can only tow a small RV or jet ski.

H2 is bigger. In 2006, it weighed 13,050 pounds, increased to 13,150 pounds in 2007, and reached 14,000 pounds in 2008 and 2009. The H3T (the pickup version of the H3) increased to 9,461 pounds compared to the 2009 version. If you’re considering a used H3T, check to see if it’s a higher-end 2009 model. Early models may be limited to 8,000 lbs.

Hummer’s stats are simple. There are no hybrid versions. No need to unpack complicated trailer packages. Just a big engine and a heavy frame. This vehicle is built for punishment, so the limits are high. But don’t let the size fool you. The H3’s 8,000-pound GCWR is still plenty for the vehicle and a few passengers.

Hyundai’s entry-level limitations

Modern cars were catching up at the time. GCWR numbers are not high. The Santa Fe is the most powerful SUV and weighs around 5500-6399 pounds depending on the model year. The 2006 model weighs a whopping 6,399 pounds, dropping to around 5,500 pounds for the 2007 and 2008 models. This variation may be due to differences in wheelbase and engine options.

Both the Sonata and Elantra are small sedans. GCWR hovers around 3,600 to 4,400 pounds. These are not tractors. The Azera was Hyundai’s flagship sedan from 2006 to 2009, priced at £4,779. It’s not a tow truck, it’s a nice cruiser.

The Tucson is a small crossover that weighs around 4,400 pounds. The Entourage is the successor to the Sedona minivan and weighs between 5,550 and 5,898 pounds. It can carry small loads but not heavy trailers. modern

Kia GCWR

The beginning and middle of the 2000s was a time of decline in Kia’s towing data. Looking at the 2006 Optima, its curb weight is a modest 5,292 pounds. The Sportage weighs slightly less and is 4,880 pounds. Most lineups like Amanti, Rio, and Spectra don’t have official ratings. It was a transition.

That changed in 2007. Sorento’s weight jumped to 9,299 pounds. The nominal weight of the Sedona is 8,015 pounds. Optima is stable. By 2009, the 9,398-pound Borrego was introduced, showing that Kia finally saw large SUVs as serious transportation options. A small car? Towing heavy objects is still largely independent.

Land Rover GCWR

Land Rover competes in a completely different weight class. When purchasing these vehicles, expect them to be able to tow heavy equipment and boats. The 2006 Range Rover tops the list at £13,324. The LR3 follows at £13,165. Even the Range Rover Sport (the typically sporty model) weighs £13,318.

Several minor adjustments were made in 2007. The LR3 weighs 13,276 pounds. The weight of the Range Rover Sport increases to £13,334. The numbers for the 2008 model year are sparse, but the Sport has decent numbers. And then 2009 passed. The LR3 jumps significantly to £13,662. The Range Rover itself weighs £13,564. It’s easy to see why these British SUVs are prized in the towing world. The numbers don’t lie.

Lexus GCWR

Lexus is a luxury car, but at its heart is Toyota. This work appears in the GCWR specification. The GX 470 was a solid performer in 2006, 2007 and 2008 at 11,521 lbs. The LX 470 is even more powerful at 12,240 lbs. If you needed to tow a big trailer in the late 2000s, these were the best option.

The RX series is lighter. The 2006 RX 330 weighs 7,510 lbs. The hybrid RX 400h is slightly heavier at 8,015 pounds. By 2008, the RX 350’s weight had dropped to 6,020 lbs. The hybrid version reduces weight to 6,340 lbs. The new 2008 LX 570 is rated up to 14,645 pounds. That’s some serious talent. This continued until 2009. Small sedans like the ES and IS rarely have tow ratings unless they’re towing a small utility vehicle.

Lincoln GCWR

Lincoln leaned on the heavy platform. The Mark LT is a workhorse machine. From 2006 to 2008, the GCWR remained at 14,500 pounds. It’s a pickup truck. Navigator is also designed with weight in mind. It started at 11,900 pounds in 2006, rose to 15,000 pounds in 2007 and remained at 15,000 pounds until 2009.

A limited number of small Lincolns are available. Town cars range in weight from 6,460 to 6,502 lbs. The MKX started at 6,370 pounds in 2007 and jumped to 7,350 pounds in 2008 and 2009. The new 2009 MKS is a light 5,277 pounds. If you need towing, you can buy a truck-based model. A car-based limousine cannot handle cargo.

Mazda GCZR

Mazda’s initiatives are wide-ranging. The B-series pick-up truck transports a load. The B4000 reached 6,973 pounds in 2006, rose by 7,000 pounds in 2007 and 2008 and fell slightly in 2009 to 6,952 pounds. The B2300 hovers around 4,744 pounds to 4,800 pounds.

CX-9 appears in the crossover market. In 2007 it was valued at 6,826 pounds. By 2009, that number had dropped to 6,484 pounds. The CX-7’s weight remains stable at 5,860 lbs. Small cars like the Mazda3 and MX-5 are not eligible for evaluation. It was never made to be towed. The 2006 MPV minibus weighed 5904 lbs. Although it is practical, it is not suitable for heavy duty work.

Mercedes-Benz GCWR

Mercedes divides its collection into luxury cruisers and powerful transporters. The ML class is the main focus. In 2006, the ML500 is priced at 6,893 pounds. The ML350 is lightweight at 6,773 pounds. However, things changed with the introduction of GL grades in 2007. The GL320 has a maximum curb weight of 12,946 lbs. The GL450 weighs 12,399 pounds. The ML63 AMG weighs 12,443 lbs.

The large G-series is also a candidate. The 2007 G500 costs 12,695 pounds. The 2008 G55 costs 12,783 pounds. In 2008 and 2009, the GL550 topped the list at 13,084 pounds. Small sedans and coupes? Most vehicles do not have a towing rating. The C-series does not have a tow rating. It’s just not designed for that.

Mercury GCWR

Mercury shares a platform with Ford, so its ratings are roughly in line with Ford’s equivalents. Climber are lifters. In 2006 it weighed 8,111 pounds, rising to 8,217 pounds in 2007 and staying there until 2009. The Monterey minivan always costs 7,990 pounds.

Over time, the Grand Marquis became more and more powerful. In 2006, it weighed 5,688 pounds, rising to 5,787 pounds in 2007, 6,000 pounds in 2008, and 6,600 pounds in 2009. The Mariner is even lighter, hovering between 4,935 and 4,991 pounds. The Sable is lightweight at 4,793 pounds. If you want to tow something big, choose the Mountaineer or Monterey.

Mini GCWR

MINI is not a towing brand. The data reflects this. From 2006 to 2009, nearly every model was GCWR rated, including Cooper hardtops, convertibles, Clubmans, and even the performance-focused John Cooper Works. They are city cars. Not designed for towing. If you need a tow vehicle, look elsewhere.

Mitsubishi GCWR

Mitsubishi has an unexpected competitor. Basically a redesigned Toyota Tundra, the Raider is a serious tow vehicle. It was 8,600 pounds in 2006, dropped to 8,583 pounds in 2007, and returned to 8,600 pounds in 2008. The 2006 Montero SUV weighs 9,937 pounds.

The Outlander is even lighter, starting at 4,891 pounds in 2006, jumping to 5,682 pounds in 2007 and dropping to 5,045 pounds in 2008. The Endeavor hovers between 6,108 and 7,552 pounds. Small cars like the Eclipse and Lancer have no ratings. It is a compact vehicle. Not suitable for heavy loads. Raider and Montero are exceptions in the lightweight class.

Nissan GCWR

Nissan’s product range in the mid-2000s ranged from standard sedans to large trucks. If you follow the 2006 Nissan GCWR**, you’ll find that the information is extensive. The Armada topped the list at 11,818 pounds, while the Sentra barely came in at 3,663 pounds. At 10,676 pounds, the Frontier fits comfortably in the middle. The 350Z is not rated, probably because it is not designed to be towed.

By 2007, Nissan’s number had increased slightly. Armada’s weight jumped to 12,800 kilograms. In fact, the Altima Hybrid offers a higher GCWR than the regular Altima (4,632 vs. 4,205 pounds), which is an interesting feature. Titan’s weight increased to 11,600 kilograms.

In 2008, the Armada’s weight jumped to 15,100 kilograms. That’s a lot of growth in just one year. The Titan went up to 11,688 lbs. The Xterra weighs slightly less at 9,300 pounds. The new Rogue starts as low as £4,430.

The 2009 model is mostly stable. The Armada has a payload of 15,100 pounds. The Frontier weighed 11,133 kilograms. Murano suffered a serious blow and his weight dropped to 7,505 kilograms. The GT-R is still unclassified.

Pontiac GCWR

Pontiac spent his later years here. These numbers tend to be lower than competing SUVs. In 2006, the Montana SV6 topped the list at 8,500 pounds. The GTO weighs 4,578 kilograms. “Sunday solstice” has no rating.

The 2007 G5 weighs 4,141 lbs. The Trent goes up a bit to 7,407 pounds. A Grand Prix always weighs around 4,600 pounds.

The G8 was introduced in 2008. The weight rating is 6,035 lbs. The weight of the G6 drops to 4,455 lbs. The Vibe’s weight remains stable at around 4,350 lbs.

For 2009, the G5’s weight has been significantly reduced to 3,902 pounds. The G8 weighs 6,035 pounds. The Vibe weighs 4,506 kilograms. “Solstice” has not been rated yet.

Porsche GCWR

Porsche keeps it simple. The 911, Boxster and Cayman do not have a GCWR rating. You can’t tow a mid-engined sports car these days. Cayenne is the only option.

The 2006 Cayenne costs £12,628.

The same classification was maintained in 2008.

By 2009, the Cayenne had gained 22 pounds to reach 12,650 pounds. It’s a small change, but it’s there.

Serve GCWR

Saab’s lineup is narrow. The 9-2X is basically a Subaru Impreza with a different badge and was priced at £5,220 in 2006. The 9-3 is priced at £5,430. The 9-5 is even heavier at 7,120 kilograms. The 9-7X is a top-of-the-range SUV that weighs 10,500 pounds.

In 2007, the 9-3 dropped slightly to 5,380 lbs. 9-5 and 9-7X are even.

2008 is basically the same as 2007.

In 2009, the 9-3’s weight jumped to 5,680 kilograms. 9-5 and 9-7X hold tight.

Saturn GCWR

Saturn is struggling. The Ion is light, with a 2006 curb weight rating of 3,946 pounds. The Relay van weighs 8,500 pounds. The VUE weighs 4,857 pounds.

The 2007 Aura weighs 4,678 kilograms. When Outlook debuted, it was estimated to weigh up to 9,500 kilograms. The weight of the relay was reduced to 7,918 lbs. The VUE Hybrid costs £4,857, the same as the petrol version.

The 2008 outlook has dropped significantly by £6,872. VUE rises to £5,475. The VUE Hybrid weighs 5,439 lbs. Sky and Astra had no ratings.

2009 was about the same as 2008. Prospect weight dropped 2 pounds to 6,852 pounds. VUE and VUE Hybrid remain stable.

Scion GCWR

Scion specializes in light sports cars and small hatchbacks. The tC, xA, xB and xD do not have a GCWR rating. Don’t pull. All data from 2006-2009 are empty.

Smart GCWR

The Fortwo is not designed to be towed. The 2008 classification is empty. Not much to see here.

Subaru GCWR

Towing restrictions according to Volkswagen model and year

If you plan to tow a small trailer, motorboat or firewood, you need to know the gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This is the maximum permissible weight of the vehicle plus the trailer and everything inside.

Volkswagen’s data from 2006 to 2009 shows a clear hierarchy. The Touareg dominates the premium segment. The 2006 Touareg weighs 12,952 lbs. The weight of the 2007 model jumped to 13,034 pounds. The 2009 Touareg 2 now weighs 12,952 pounds.

Others are significantly reduced. Most crossovers and sedans do not have GCWR data published in this data set.

2006 Volkswagen GCWR Information
Only the Touareg is 12,952 lbs: £12,952.
