A former Alfa Romeo designer has revealed sketches of a mid-engine sports car concept that was ultimately scrapped, a project intended to directly challenge the Porsche Boxster. The design, though never realized, showcases a compelling vision for an Alfa Romeo that could have rewritten the brand’s position in the premium sports car market.
The Vision: Alfa vs. Porsche
In 2008, Alfa Romeo explored developing a compact, two-seat sports car to compete with Audi and Porsche. The goal was ambitious: to establish Alfa as a serious player in the high-end segment, allowing Maserati to focus on larger, more luxurious models. This wasn’t merely about building a car; it was about redefining Alfa’s identity.
The sketches, shared by former designer Juan Manuel Diaz on Instagram, reveal a convertible with classic Alfa Romeo styling: a prominent trilobe grille, flowing body lines, and an overall aesthetic that echoes the elegance of the Porsche Boxster. The design aimed for agility, engaging driving dynamics, and a distinctly beautiful form.
Engine Speculation and Missed Opportunities
While the sketches don’t specify the intended engine, it’s plausible that the 1.75 TBi engine – later used in the 2013 Alfa Romeo 4C – could have been a suitable fit. The iconic Busso V6 was already discontinued by this point, making the TBi a logical choice for a compact sports car. The cancellation of this project represents a significant missed opportunity for Alfa Romeo.
The automotive industry is littered with abandoned concepts, but this case highlights a strategic shift that never materialized.
