Ringbrothers Unveil the Kingpin Mustang: 800 Horsepower Retro-Futurism

The annual SEMA (Specialty Equipment Marketing Association) show in Las Vegas is a gathering place for automotive innovation, showcasing everything from cutting-edge concepts to meticulously crafted custom vehicles. Among the most anticipated reveals each year are those from Ringbrothers, the legendary custom vehicle builders known for their bold transformations. This year, the Ringbrothers have once again delivered with the “Kingpin” — a stunning 1969 Mustang Mach 1 that blends classic aesthetics with modern performance.

At its heart, the Kingpin is powered by a hand-built 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, supercharged by a Whipple unit and tuned to produce an impressive 800 horsepower. This raw power is routed through a Bowler six-speed manual transmission, giving drivers a direct and engaging connection to the vehicle’s immense power. While impressive, the Kingpin’s engine isn’t its most revolutionary feature — the Ringbrothers have taken the iconic Mustang through a complete reinvention.

Perhaps the most significant transformation is the chassis. The original body-on-frame structure of the 1969 Mustang has been replaced with a unibody chassis based on the Roadster Shop platform. This change, paired with a dual-wishbone suspension and Fox coilover dampers, dramatically improves the vehicle’s handling and stability. The result is a Mustang that retains its classic charm but now performs with the agility of a modern sports car.

Externally, the Kingpin is wider and more menacing than the original. The front is two inches wider, the rear is 3.5 inches broader, and the wheelbase is extended by 1.5 inches. Carbon fiber accents and custom rear valence add a modern edge, while the overall design maintains the unmistakable presence of the Mach 1. Inside, the car features a fully custom interior with Dakota Digital gauges, Vintage Air climate control, and a sophisticated roll cage integrated into the design. The attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the 3D-printed dashboard elements to the high-performance Michelin tires.

Over 5,500 hours of meticulous work went into building this automotive masterpiece. While the Kingpin might not be as aggressively styled as some of Ringbrothers’ past projects, it represents a perfect balance of power, precision, and artistry. It’s a testament to what can be achieved when heritage meets innovation.

The Kingpin Mustang is more than just a car — it’s a celebration of engineering excellence and a reminder of why Ringbrothers remain a force in the automotive world
