Denza, the premium brand under Chinese automotive giant BYD, is preparing to launch a high-performance electric sports car in the UK by 2027. The vehicle, positioned as a direct competitor to the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT, will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next summer before entering European markets.
Expanding Beyond Luxury and SUVs
Denza’s initial UK lineup, slated for next year, includes the Z9 GT shooting brake, the D9 luxury MPV, and the B5 SUV. The upcoming sports car, internally referred to as the ‘Z’ concept, will serve as a flagship model designed to elevate the brand’s image in Europe.
This strategy is common among emerging automakers: launching a high-profile performance vehicle to establish credibility before wider market penetration. BYD’s move signals confidence in Denza’s ability to compete in the premium segment.
Cutting-Edge Technology
The ‘Z’ concept, previewed at the Shanghai motor show, boasts advanced features such as steer-by-wire technology and magnetorheological suspension. The cockpit is designed with a strong emphasis on cutting-edge tech, hinting at a highly digitized driving experience.
Denza has also explored unconventional capabilities like “crab walking” and “tank turning” in the Z9 GT, and there is speculation that the sports car could inherit an even more powerful version of the Z9’s tri-motor powertrain – potentially exceeding its current 952 bhp output. Prototypes have already been tested at the Nürburgring, suggesting a possible performance benchmark attempt.
Strategic UK Launch
According to BYD executive vice-president Stella Li, the sports car will be displayed at Goodwood in July before arriving in showrooms. The final production name remains undisclosed, though the ‘Z’ designation is likely to stick.

This deliberate approach indicates a clear marketing strategy: building anticipation through high-profile events before the official market release.
Denza’s launch of this high-performance model represents a significant step towards establishing itself as a serious contender in the European luxury car market, directly challenging established brands like Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.
