Cadillac has officially reversed course on the XT6. The three-row mid-size SUV is coming back, and it will run on gasoline. Not batteries. Internal combustion.
This isn’t a rumor anymore. Kristian Aquilina, Cadillac’s global vice president, posted the confirmation on LinkedIn. The brand is walking back its ambitious timeline to sell exclusively electric vehicles by 2030. Again.
The Vistiq Can’t Replace the XT6
Here is the raw math that forced this pivot.
Cadillac moved roughly 20,000 units of the XT6 in its final full year before cancellation. It was a staple for families who needed space but weren’t ready to plug in. Then came the electric Vistiq as the designated successor.
It flopped.
In 2025, the Vistiq moved just 7,879 units. The first half of 2026 shows the same stagnant trajectory. You don’t kill a proven gas model when its EV replacement is moving less than half the volume. Customers aren’t ready to trade the familiar for the electric in that segment. So, the gas XT6 returns.
When Will It Launch?
Patience is required here. Cadillac didn’t drop a specific month for the XT6’s debut. What they did say is that it won’t show up before the redesigned XT5.
The XT5 is slated for a full overhaul next year. The new XT6 follows after that. Likely 2027 or later.
It’s a pragmatic delay rather than a strategic retreat. You need to fix the XT5 first. It’s the volume seller. The XT6 is the niche play for people who still want three rows of seats and a gas tank.
Why the U-Turn?
Cadillac promised an all-electric future. Then reality hit. The Vistiq’s weak sales proved that the brand’s EV strategy was outpacing market demand for larger utility vehicles.
This isn’t entirely shocking. Cadillac already admitted the CT5 sedan would get a second generation—another gas-powered ICE model. They’ve been open about refreshing the XT5 with a gas engine. The XT6 return is just the next logical step in that series of recalibrations.
What Does This Mean for Buyers?
If you’re shopping for a Cadillac three-row SUV right now, your options are limited.
- Escalade (Gas): The non-iQ version. Expensive. Luxury. Big.
- Vistiq (EV): The current electric option. Affordable, but low resale buzz and sales figures.
- XT6 (Returned Gas): The missing link.
For those who rejected the Escalade’s price tag but found the Vistiq’s tech or range anxiety unappealing, the returning XT6 fills the void. It offers a compromise. Three rows. Gas engine. Familiar Cadillac handling.
No one is claiming this saves Cadillac from its EV goals. But it keeps the lights on in the interim.
Will the gas XT6 sell as well as it did before? The 20,000-unit benchmark is high. But with the Vistiq struggling to hit 8,000, the bar is lower. Cadillac isn’t betting the whole company on this move. They’re just stopping the bleeding.
The XT6 returns. It gets a gas engine. It launches after the XT5 redesign. Everything else? We’ll see.
