Gravity is a boring force unless you stop to think about it. I pull the car down. every time. The ground pushes back up with equal force. The tires grip tightly to the road surface. The car sits there. Still.

Then hit the gas.

Things change instantly. The rear wheels press against the ground. Horizontal force. Real force. The car accelerates. At low speeds, almost all of the engine’s power is converted into moving mass. Newton’s second law is your friend. Force is equal to mass times acceleration. Simple.

But the car resisted. Inertia is a bitch. It counterattacks with a force proportional to its weight. The faster you push, the harder it pushes back.

The Air Gets in the Way

Speed kills acceleration. Not because the engine dies, but because the air does.

As the car moves, the air pressure increases. Air resistance increases. It’s not linear. It’s exponential. Double your speed? Quadruple the drag. The air applies force to the front of the car. It works in the opposite direction to the propulsive force of the tire.

So you subtract drag from your driving force.

$$ F_{Net} = F_{Drive} – F_{Drag} $$

Initially, $F_{drive}$ wins. Big time. You can even feel it from your seat. The force available for acceleration is high. However, as the velocity increases, $F_{drag}$ also increases. It eats up the surplus force.

Hit the wall

Eventually, a limit appears. Top speed.

This isn’t a glitch. It’s physics. At this particular speed, the driving force is exactly equal to the air resistance.

$$ F_{drive} = F_{drag} $$

The net force is zero. Acceleration stops. The car cannot go faster. The engine may still have power, but the force of the air pushing backwards is greater than the force of the tires pushing forward.

Why is this important? Because most people think top speed is related to horsepower. It’s not. It’s about the drag coefficient and the frontal area. Cars with less aerodynamics and slower speeds will hit this wall sooner. A fast car with sleek lines delays it.

Air doesn’t care about 0-60 times. It just pushes back. And when it pushes back as hard as you push forward, you’re done.

Or are you? If you drop the hood. Or change the tires. Or simply wait for the next gear. The battle between tires and air never ends. It just resets.
