Mercedes-AMG GLC53 Returns to Six-Cylinder Power

Mercedes-AMG is bringing back a six-cylinder engine to its GLC53 SUV lineup for the 2027 model year, reversing a controversial decision made with the current generation. The new turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter straight-six delivers 443 horsepower (up to 472 with overboost), offering a performance balance between the four-cylinder GLC43 and the hybrid-powered GLC63.

Engine and Performance Details

The reinstated engine is similar to the one found in the two-door CLE53, but with increased torque: 472 pound-feet available for up to 10 seconds in overboost. Key improvements include a revised cylinder head, intake camshaft, larger intercooler, and a more powerful electric supercharger that now runs almost continuously. AMG has also tuned the exhaust system to improve sound, though subjective impressions will require testing.

The GLC53 pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. An optional AMG Dynamic Plus package unlocks a performance upgrade, including an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential and a Drift mode that allows for pure rear-wheel drive. With this package, Mercedes claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 167 mph.

Interior and Styling Options

Inside, the GLC53 retains the digital gauge cluster and vertically oriented center console display found in other models. The AMG Dynamic Plus package adds a microsuede steering wheel with adjustable drive-mode controls. Adaptive dampers and rear-axle steering are standard.

Mercedes will offer the GLC53 with an exclusive Golden Accents package for the debut model year, which includes Techgold details on the body graphics and 21-inch wheels. AMG Night packages are also available, providing black chrome accents and aerodynamic enhancements. Interior options include bolstered seats with contrast stitching and carbon-fiber trim.

Pricing and Availability

The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GLC53 is expected to go on sale in the second half of this year, with pricing estimated around $70,000 for the standard SUV model. The GLC53 Coupe variant will likely start above $75,000.

The return of the six-cylinder engine signifies a shift towards performance refinement, addressing criticism of the previous four-cylinder-only lineup. Mercedes-AMG appears to be responding to consumer demand for more traditional high-performance powertrains while still integrating modern technology like electric supercharging and hybrid systems.
