Nissan is aggressively expanding its high-performance Nismo division, promising five new models to double its global output by 2028. This move is central to the automaker’s broader recovery strategy, signaling a renewed focus on performance and brand excitement.

Nismo’s Global Expansion

Currently, the Nissan Ariya Nismo is the only Nismo model widely available in the UK, starting at £56,000 (with potential discounts through certain services). However, other markets already have access to Nismo versions of popular models like the Z sports car, Skyline sedan, X-Trail SUV, and Patrol off-roader.

Nissan aims to increase Nismo sales from approximately 100,000 units to 150,000 by 2028. The company projects that overseas sales will jump from around 40% to 60% of total Nismo volume, indicating a major push into international markets.

Upcoming Models: What to Expect

While Nissan has not yet revealed the specific models, industry speculation points to several likely candidates. A high-performance version of the new Nissan Micra is highly probable, leveraging the electric supermini’s platform (shared with the Renault 5 and Alpine A290). A souped-up Nissan Leaf is also reportedly in development, positioning it as a competitor to vehicles like the Skoda Elroq vRS and Kia EV4 GT.

The next-generation GT-R, previewed by the 1,341bhp Hyper Force Concept in 2023, is also expected to be part of Nismo’s revitalization. Nissan plans to accelerate development through prototype testing in racing activities, ensuring cutting-edge hardware and software integration.

Why Performance Matters to Nissan’s Recovery

Launching high-performance vehicles might seem counterintuitive for a company facing financial challenges. However, Nissan executives emphasize that Nismo serves as a crucial brand driver. Richard Candler, Global VP for Product Strategy, stated that Nismo “infuses our range with a sense of excitement and performance.” He further explained that technology transfer from racing enhances the driving experience and reinforces Nissan’s commitment to innovation.

“Nismo not only enhances the driving experience, but also reinforces Nissan’s commitment to pushing boundaries.”

The expansion of Nismo is not merely about selling more performance cars; it’s about elevating the entire Nissan brand through technological advancements and a stronger emotional connection with consumers. By doubling down on high-performance models, Nissan hopes to reignite its reputation for engineering excellence and secure its future in a competitive automotive landscape.
