Nissan has updated the Z sports car for the 2027 model year, introducing both cosmetic and mechanical enhancements across all trims. The changes, which mirror updates already released in Japan, aim to improve the Z’s appeal in a shrinking market for affordable rear-wheel-drive sports cars.
Exterior and Trim Updates
The standard Z Sport and Performance trims receive a redesigned front fascia with a split grille inspired by classic Datsun Z models. This isn’t just for looks; Nissan claims the revised bumper and grille improve cooling and aerodynamics. A new color option, Shinkai Green Pearl Metallic (previously Unryu Green), is available exclusively with a black roof, paying homage to the S30-generation Z from the 1970s. The front Nissan badge has been removed, replaced by the Z logo for a cleaner, more focused appearance.
The Performance trim also gets redesigned 19-inch forged black wheels, a tan interior option, and a faster 15-watt wireless charger. Suspension improvements include larger-diameter monotube shock absorbers for better ride comfort and handling.
Nismo: Manual Transmission and GT-R Brakes
The biggest change is the availability of a six-speed manual transmission in the top-tier Nismo model. This long-awaited addition is paired with engine tuning for quicker throttle response. Nissan has also adapted the front brake rotors from the GT-R for superior stopping power, reducing weight by 19 pounds. Suspension and steering have been further optimized to complement these changes. The Nismo also gets a new gear lever and wireless charging.
Functional Improvements Across the Lineup
All 2027 Z models benefit from an updated fuel tank designed to maintain a steady fuel supply during aggressive cornering. This demonstrates Nissan’s commitment to addressing real-world performance concerns, not just cosmetic upgrades.
Market Context: A Rare Breed
The Z’s updates come at a time when affordable sports cars are becoming scarce. With the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 slated for discontinuation, the Nissan Z is positioned to fill a unique space in the market. Despite Nissan’s financial challenges, the Z remains a key halo performance model.
The 2027 Nissan Z will be showcased at the New York Auto Show before arriving in dealerships this summer. Pricing has not been announced, but the current base model starts around $44,000, with the Nismo reaching just over $67,000.
The Nissan Z stands as a rare exception in a market where rear-wheel-drive sports cars are increasingly rare. The 2027 updates prove that Nissan remains committed to keeping this enthusiast favorite alive.
